Located in central Maricopa County, Mesa is the largest East Valley city and the sixth most populous municipality in the state of Arizona. It is bounded by Tempe on the west, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and the towns of Gilbert and Queen Creek on the south, and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in the southeast. More than 40,000 students are enrolled in Mesa’s public schools.
Mesa is also home to a variety of infertility centers and clinics. Two of these, PESA and MESA, are effective means of obtaining sperm for in vitro fertilization (ICSI) for men with obstruction of the vas deferens caused by either a surgical vasectomy or congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens.
PESA is a simple, low cost procedure that can be performed by urologists without the use of a high-powered microscope and is best suited for obstructive azoospermia. It involves a urologist inserting a needle into the epididymis to aspirate fluid and can be used on both sides of the testicles. Sufficient sperm for ICSI can be obtained in 80% of cases.
MESA is a more complex, surgical procedure to retrieve sperm for ICSI in patients who have a vasal obstruction due to a previous vasectomy or CBAVD and are unable to produce sperm in the ejaculate. MESA can be performed as a standalone procedure or coordinated with an egg retrieval in patients with a woman partner who is not experiencing fertility problems. It requires general anesthesia and the use of a microscope, but can retrieve more mature sperm for ICSI than aspiration methods. pesa mesa
